We are unfortunately replicating this (thankfully not yet to the same extent), but Europe really does seem to be running the experiment "what if we let the most self-loathing losers govern us?"
Governments all over the world contain idiots with too much power producing unintended consequences-- Europe is unique in that it genuinely seems to have a deathwish.
This was a really helpful article for someone only tangentially involved these days in software and tech, yet fully alert to the bureaucratic overreach of Western governments in general and the EU in particular. The United States, instead of seeing the EU as a cautionary tale, is on the emulation path. Frankly I'd like to see a few of the tech overlords take a stand against what is arguably an existential crisis for their very businesses, instead of climbing into bed and keeping the covers warm for their jailers.
