I was pulling my hair out this morning, trying to figure out why I couldn't create a full Twitter thread. This makes sense -- the tweets before the one w/ a substack link were fine. But I couldn't reply to my own tweet w/ substack link. Ugh, Notes can't come soon enough to help w/ discoverability! Twitter has been my primary engine.
That would be a big mistake from Twitter; I'm using Twitter to discover interesting articles like yours. But at the end of the day, PW's content is epic, and there will be other ways to find readers if Twitter does not allow links to substack.
FYI substack is taking investment currently on wefunder. If you want to support what's happening here beyond subscribing to writers you like, check it out. You only have a short amount of time left to invest:
Bizarre... I'd think Substack and Twitter are relatively symbiotic in status quo and that, if Twitter didn't do this, I'd guess Substack Notes would be pretty niche, people would mostly just continue talking on Twitter. But this move raises the value of Substack Notes a lot. Most of the Professional Tweeters (PT's) I like write on Substack or comment about so-and-so's article on Substack. So I guess they'll post on Notes if this turns out to permanent. Will have to follow Notes then!
I tried to get back into Twitter when Elon Musk acquired it, but the 5th Column is hard at work on that platform now. They are still throttling content and deciding what you should and should not see, just from the shadows now.
I'm surprised how few people understand what's going on here.
With Notes, Substack has BLATANTLY copied Twitter. It's a literal carbon copy.
Even Substack's messaging about advertising and free speech is a rip of what Elon has spoken about.
And as per Elon, is exploiting Twitter's data to grow its business.
Let's not forget; for a long time, Substack has benefited from the reach and interaction Twitter provides Substack. Many articles are posted on Substack and disseminated/discussed on Twitter.
This is not about free speech. Try copying someone's product like-for-like and see how they respond.
The claim that Elon is "censoring" folks is also blatantly untrue. Writers can post anything anywhere else. Just not Substack. This is not censorship. This is Twitter vs. Substack.
And for the writers who "love" Substack so much, remember what Elon said about Twitter -- it's a dying business that may fail anytime soon. Substack, on the other hand, is burning through VC cash it dishes out to woo writers. Substack is paying writers to be on its platform, hoping to create the network effect Twitter already has. Imagine having to pay people to join Twitter.
To me, Elon is making the right business decisions here, in defending his business. And he's not blocking Substack; rather, he's throttling it.
Of course, many won't bother, but right now, Twitter's the platform that needs our support. Not Substack.
Censorship definition - You are comfortable with your power & customer acceptability rate and do not want to step-up your game to compete with new player or info - censor, block, drop, lock, lie, profess ignorance while finding and destroying every bit that might make you work harder.
Anti-censorship - Change your game to meet and beat competition head on with ingenuity, facts, hard work and then there 's always the million-dollar-spit-in-the-ocean. If after all, you are still losing, accept your position and hang in until it is your time again.
Well, one good thing out of it is that perhaps more people will subscribe to the Substack platform, like I just did. I don’t like any form of speech suppression and Twitter just proved me it’s not worth my time. I’m starting to like it here :-)
sigh... many Substack publications depend on Twitter for their distribution
I have noticed that the last 2 days. I thought that no one was posting. Thanks for the explanation

Just an fyi for everyone- I have a custom URL for my Substack and I was able to post using that link, rather than the Substack URL.

Twitter is headed fast and furiously toward being a mis-information platform.... as directed by its owner....
I was able to post this link back to twitter. But, NOT able to tweet comments on the link including tagging you @PirateWires.
Etrange.

Agh, this makes me sad. Still love, Elon but this seems like a bad move.
Elon, I will sign up for Twitter Blue this very night if you fix this!
Yes, I think they have changed it.
I just posted a link successfully. Maybe only certain substacks are cut.
