Today, Pangram is releasing new features that will detect AI-generated video and imagery.
Max Spero, Pangram’s CEO, who co-founded the company with Bradley Emi, spoke to Pirate Wires about why and how the company decided to move beyond text-based AI detection.
Pangram began working on image detection at the beginning of the year, Spero explained, because they felt AI images were becoming increasingly difficult to spot. Also: many people out there “are trying to either create a hoax or create fake Iran war drone footage,” he said. Further: AI image and video detection could be especially useful on platforms like Amazon, Spero said, where ads are increasingly leveraging AI-generated images.
They began by testing existing image detectors. “We ran our benchmark and found that most of them, they kind of sucked, like 80 to 95% accuracy,” said Spero. In July, Pangram released its first AI image detector to subscribers as a research preview; now, they are officially launching two new models.
Pangram’s new flagship image detection model (“Image 1.0”), designed to handle the shoddy quality of AI images as they appear online, achieved 99.96% on an internal benchmark, according to Spero.
Pangram’s new video model (“Image Flash 1.0”) — which works by sampling various video frames — is also performing well internally, and scored 98.57% on one benchmark.
Image and video AI detection tools are not new. Several, including at TruthScan, a Pangram competitor, have been available since 2025 or even earlier. But Pangram has historically been very late to market — for good reason, per Spero.
“We’ve been very careful with our release cadence to make sure we only release something that we think is truly state-of-the-art by a large margin,” Spero said.
