This week, Resolution, a nonprofit established in June to align artificial intelligence with the interests of humanity, announced a $160 million commitment from Coefficient Giving, a philanthropic organization dedicated to high-impact, research-based giving.
Normally, funding rounds this large involve venture capital, but this is not that. This is a donation to a nonprofit organization. Coefficient’s CEO, Alexander Berger, called it “our biggest AI technical safety grant yet.” For scale, it’s around four times what Elon Musk gave OpenAI when it launched as a nonprofit.
