Professional sports is still recovering from the announcement of two major federal indictments alleging sports stars got tied up in illegal gambling. The investigation, which uncovered both illegal betting on the NBA and rigged high-stakes poker games, has already swept up basketball stars Terry Rozier and Damon Jones, as well as Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, all for sharing insider information on player performance so friends and accomplices could profit.
The still-growing scandal is the latest in an ever-expanding string of sports-betting incidents. Two pitchers for the Cleveland Guardians are still under investigation for suspicious bets. Last year, the San Diego Padres’ Tucupita Marcano and the Toronto Raptors’ Jontay Porter were banned from play, as were a number of minor league players. Shohei Ohtani, arguably baseball’s biggest star, narrowly avoided trouble when it was revealed his translator had stolen millions from him to pay gambling debts. And that was just in major league sports; college has, if anything, a bigger problem.
