The Life and Death of American MallsSep 26
rip malls and the socialist who escaped nazis to create them, and the era when we had one perfectly air-conditioned place to hang out together irl

The year is 2001. You’re reading this on your blue plastic iMac with the awkward circular mouse (or maybe you’re on your PalmPilot if you’re elite). Britney Spears, the most famous popstar in the world, just danced in a bikini on live TV while carrying a seven-foot albino burmese python and singing about being a “slave,” triggering an outcry from PETA. Donald Trump is a real-estate guy and registered Democrat. And I’m in eighth grade listening to a new-ish band called System of a Down (on my Discman).
None of us know what’s coming.
This is the innocent-slash-ominous world of 2001 Live, run by 27-year-old Ohio native Manny Marotta. Here, just over half a million people pretend it’s actually 2001: America isn’t at war with anyone, Michael Jackson is still alive (and performing!), George Bush is chilling at his ranch, and Dolly Parton just released her 38th album. Oh, I can’t wait to take my flight from Boston to Los Angeles on Tuesday, people tweet. I’m going to have breakfast at Windows on the World on September 11th. Come join me!
