In January 2025, a prototype of the first privately built supersonic plane slipped through the sky over the Mojave Desert, reaching Mach 1.1 without any sonic boom. When its manufacturer, the ironically named Boom Supersonic, delivers its final product to airlines in 2029, it will be the first new civilian plane to fly supersonic since the Concorde’s final flight in 2003.
But it won’t hit Mach 1 over the United States thanks to 14 CFR § 91.817, also known as the Anti-Supersonic Law, an unholy product of government incompetence, environmentalist astroturfing, and Luddite subterfuge that closed the door on supersonic domestic flight in 1971.
