In 2023, Measure United to House LA (ULA), took effect.
The so-called “mansion tax” imposed a 4% tax on property sales above $5 million (and a 5.5% tax on sales above $10 million).
Enthusiastically backed by DSA-endorsed mayoral nominee Nithya Raman, now up 11 points in the mayoral race, the tax was marketed as a Eat the Rich progressive redistribution scheme, per Nithya in a 2023 interview, that would redirect money from wealthy homeowners toward affordable housing and homelessness prevention.

Despite the nickname, the measure also hit apartment buildings, commercial property, warehouses, and vacant land. UCLA said it would raise $923 million a year — enough over a decade to help produce 26,000 affordable units and support 43,000 construction jobs.
But once again, a tax passed by the tender-hearted bureaucrats of the Golden State seems to be achieving… the literal opposite of its stated purpose.
