TikTok creators posted in support of the company’s CEO Shou Zi Chew after he testified before Congress Thursday, with some users of the app claiming their “For You” page was flooded with pro-Chew content. Currently, a search of the 40-year-old Singaporean businessman’s name on the app returns almost entirely positive content.

TikTokkers seem to be paying little attention to the specifics of the hearing, apart from Congressman Richard Hudson’s question regarding whether or not TikTok accesses the home WiFi network of the user (something all apps do). The congressman’s confusion over how WiFi works has been taken to mean that all of Congress is technologically illiterate.

Chew has become a celebrity on his platform, if not more. Women are not only posting thirsty content about him, there’s even a song dedicated to him.

There’s something very strange about the adulation Chew has received. The relationship between social media CEOs and their users is famously contentious, if not outright hostile. Perhaps TikTokers truly do see Chew as a hero, standing between the very existence of their accounts and a paranoid, incompetent, geriatric government that doesn’t even understand how WiFi works.

But the worship is strange. Tech CEOs are supposed to be wealthy punching bags, not Marvel characters. That’s America. This? Not so much.
