“This song is literally the sound that activates generations worth of feminine rage and oppression,” reads the caption on the TikTok post from user leah.vanniekirk as she lipsyncs along in her bedroom to lyrics about the work demanded of women.
All day, every day, therapist, mother, maid
Nymph, then a virgin, nurse, then a servant
Just an appendage, live to attend him
So that he never lifts a finger…
It’s certainly nothing new, this concept of catchy songs that highlight the unique struggles women face. Aretha Franklin famously demanded we all show the female gender a little more R-E-S-P-E-C-T, while the late, great Dolly Parton waxed poetic in “9 to 5” about women in the workplace being “just a step on the boss man’s ladder.”
But there do appear to be a few things that make Paris Paloma’s “Labour” unique in the genre of pussy power pop anthems: namely, that the catalyst for its popularity seems to be a series of high-profile recent court cases, including a (looks over the shoulder for signs of women) QUESTIONABLE accusation of rape, and a not-so-questionable accusation that a crazy bitch killed her kids with exercise bands.
