a brief history of clownery against cute, unassuming autonomous vehicles — and why waymo always wins

After flying under the radar since its public launch in 2023 — likely because it looked fake as hell, but that’s neither here nor there — the Tea app managed to achieve one of the most embarrassing speed-runs on record: surpassing ChatGPT as the most-downloaded free app in Apple’s U.S. App Store on July 24, 2025, only to suffer a catastrophic data “leak” the next morning.
Tea positioned itself as the app version of those “Are We Dating the Same Guy?” Facebook groups. Founded by former Qualified and Salesforce Director of Product Management Sean Cook, who created the company after watching his mother get catfished, the app allowed women to flag potentially “problematic” men through anonymous, Yelp-style reviews. Critically, it also allowed women to post names and photos of the men they were reviewing. Marketing collateral also showed off the ability for users to create polls to ask whether they should date — or continue dating — particular guys.
