In the first week of August, 2025, New York City’s Department of Homeless Services (DHS) opened Ace’s Place, the nation’s first taxpayer-funded shelter dedicated entirely to transgender and gender-nonconforming people.
The facility offers 150 beds, yoga, mediation, and culinary arts programs in two state-of-the-art commercial kitchens. Ebony Coleman, the founder and CEO of Destination Tomorrow, who operates the shelter, describes it “as an opportunity for you to come home.”
The only problem? That home costs $65 million in taxpayer funding… for just the first five years. And the city is required to open three more.
