Last Monday, just a few weeks after Elon confirmed murmurs of an imminent SpaceX IPO, he announced that SpaceX has acquired xAI.
While everyone has an opinion on why — to make xAI investors whole, or to use SpaceX’s vast cash reserves to subsidize xAI’s AI research — I see this merger as the culmination of the last 30 years of Elon’s career.
From his 2011 angel investment in DeepMind (now Google’s AI lab), through cofounding OpenAI in 2015, to the creation of xAI in 2023, Elon has long believed artificial intelligence, if deployed at scale, will bring about a breakthrough for humanity. It will cure diseases (see: Neuralink), solve aging, help us better manage our grid… etc.
However.
We’re limited by the energy available on Earth. And by our grinding bureaucracy (more on that later).
AI-related spending in 2025 totaled over $1.5 trillion, and most of it’s gone toward data centers. But already, we’re witnessing pushback to data center expansion — New York Democrats just proposed a three-year moratorium on data center construction. Pundits falsely claim that using AI wastes water. And we still need more power.
